Keel: Bipolar Plan & Log Privacy Policy

Effective September 15, 2026.

If you are in crisis

You don't have to be sure it's an emergency.

These are also one tap from every screen inside Keel, including onboarding, and are never behind a paywall or an account.

This Privacy Policy explains how Keel: Bipolar Plan & Log, an app operated by CG Software Services LLC (CG Software Studio), handles information. Effective date: September 15, 2026.

The short version

  • Keel collects nothing. There is no account, no server and no sync, and nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
  • Everything you write — your diagnosis selection, your plan, your daily entries, your settings — stays in the app's private storage on your phone. We cannot see it, and neither can anyone else.
  • The only ways anything leaves your phone are ones you start yourself: sharing an export, or tapping a number to call or text.
  • Because we hold no copy, we cannot recover your data for you, and we cannot delete it for you either. You already hold the only copy.

This summary is not the policy. The sections below are, and they do not contradict it.

Who we are

Keel: Bipolar Plan & Log is built and published by CG Software Studio, the brand operated by CG Software Services LLC. You can reach us at support@cgsoftwarestudio.com.

Information we collect

Keel does not collect personal information from you, including through analytics, crash logs, device identifiers, or third-party SDKs.

What Keel stores on your device

Keel does store things — it would be useless otherwise. All of it stays on your device, and none of it is ours. Specifically:

  • The diagnosis you selected during setup (bipolar I or bipolar II).
  • Your plan: your warning signs, what you intend to do, who you intend to tell, and the name and phone number of your prescriber and your support person.
  • Your daily entries: hours slept, bed and wake times, mood, whether you took your medication, which of your warning signs you noticed, and your notes.
  • Your settings, including your reflection thresholds and your appearance preference.

What leaves your device

Nothing leaves your phone unless you choose to send it. There are exactly two ways that happens, and you start both:

  • The prescriber export. When you tap Share, Keel writes a PDF or CSV into the app's temporary storage on your device and hands it to the standard iOS share sheet. Where it goes from there — Mail, Messages, Files, AirDrop, printing, a clinic portal — is entirely your choice, and it is governed by whichever app or service you send it to. We never see it.
  • Calling or texting a crisis line, your prescriber or your support person. Tapping one of those opens your phone's dialler or messaging app with the number filled in. Keel does not place the call, is not part of it, and records nothing about it. Your carrier and the service you contact handle it as they would any other call or message.

Anything you send out of Keel is then in the hands of the app or service you sent it to. A PDF in your email is as private as your email account.

Information we do not collect

  • Keel has no account, no server and no sync. Your diagnosis selection, your plan, your daily entries and your settings are stored only in the app's private storage on your device. On iOS that file is covered by the operating system's Data Protection, which encrypts it while your device is locked.
  • No analytics SDK, no advertising identifier, no tracking, no fingerprinting, and no crash reporting that could carry your entries.
  • No location, no motion or step data, no contacts, no microphone, no camera, no Apple Health data, and no data from a wearable.
  • The note Keel shows after a log is produced on the device at that moment and is not stored anywhere, not even locally.
  • We do not sell, share or disclose your information, because we do not have it.

How we use information

There is no use to describe, because there is nothing to use. Your entries stay on your phone and are never received by us, so they are never read, analysed, aggregated, sold, shared or used to improve anything. The only information we ever handle is what you choose to put in a support email, and that is used only to answer you.

Third-party services

Keel does not share information with third-party services for their own purposes.

Analytics and crash reporting

There are none. Keel contains no analytics SDK, no product-usage tracking and no advertising identifier. We do not know how many screens you opened, whether you logged today, or whether you opened the crisis sheet.

There is none. Keel contains no crash or error-reporting service, deliberately: a crash report from an app like this one could carry the contents of the screen a person was on, and no diagnostic benefit is worth that. It means we rely on you telling us when something breaks.

Network activity

Keel makes no network request to store, send or back up anything you enter. It is worth being exact about the requests that do exist, because "no network requests" is a strong claim and an undisclosed one would undermine everything else on this page:

  • App update check. Keel is built with Expo, and on launch the app may contact Expo's update service to ask whether a corrected version of the app's code has been published. That request carries the app's version and build information, your device platform, and — as with any internet request — your IP address. It carries nothing you have entered: your plan and your entries are not readable by that mechanism and are never included in it. If your device is offline the check simply fails and the app carries on.
  • Nothing else. No analytics endpoint, no advertising network, no error-reporting service, no content server, no font or asset CDN — the fonts ship inside the app. The app's storage layer contains no networking code at all, and an automated test fails the build if any is added.
  • Apple sees what Apple sees for any app: your App Store download or update, and whatever your device settings share with Apple. That relationship is between you and Apple, and we receive no report about you from it.

Device permissions

  • Notifications — Not requested. Keel sends no notifications and no reminders of any kind.
  • Location — Not requested, at any precision, at any time.
  • Health and fitness data — Not requested. Keel does not read from or write to Apple Health.
  • Contacts — Not requested. You type your prescriber and support person's details in yourself, and they stay in Keel.
  • Camera, microphone, photos, motion — Not requested.
  • The share sheet, the phone and Messages — Used only at the moment you tap Share, or tap a number to call or text. These are the standard system interfaces and need no standing permission.

Notifications

Keel sends no push notifications and no local notifications. It never asks for notification permission, and there is no reminder, nudge or streak alert anywhere in the app.

Data retention

Everything stays on your device for as long as you keep it there. Because your entries never reach us, there is nothing on our side to retain, and nothing for us to export, correct or delete on your behalf — you already hold the only copy. The only records we ever have are support emails you choose to send us, which we keep only as long as needed to answer you.

Device backups

If you have iCloud or encrypted local backups enabled, your device's backup may include Keel's data, as it does for other apps. That backup is governed by Apple's terms and your device settings, not by us, and we have no access to it. You can exclude Keel from backups in your device settings. There is no backup of your data anywhere else, and none that we hold.

Your choices and data deletion

Any entry can be edited or deleted in the app at any time. To erase everything, use Settings → Your data → Delete all data, which permanently removes your plan, your entries and your settings from the device. It cannot be undone and we hold no copy to restore from. Deleting the app removes all of it as well.

Rights under GDPR, UK GDPR, CCPA and similar laws that concern data held by a company do not engage here, because no such data exists. If you email us and would like that correspondence deleted afterwards, say so and we will delete it.

Children's privacy

Keel is intended for adults with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone — including children — because we do not collect information at all.

Security

Your entries are held in the app's private storage and never transmitted. On iOS that file is covered by the operating system's Data Protection, which encrypts it while your device is locked, and it is not readable by other apps. Keel implements no encryption of its own and relies on the operating system's. The strongest security property here is structural rather than technical: there is no server to breach, no account to take over, and no copy of your data anywhere but your phone. The practical consequence is that your device passcode and your device backups are what protect your entries, so keeping a passcode set matters.

How you can check this

These are checkable claims, not assurances. The app's storage layer contains no networking code, and the project's automated tests fail the build if any is added. The App Store privacy label matches this page. If a future version of Keel ever collects anything, that will be stated here and in the App Store label before that version ships — not afterwards.

App Store privacy label

Keel's App Store privacy label is "Data Not Collected" — the answer to Apple's questionnaire is that we do not collect data from this app. Nothing about tracking, and no data types, are declared, because there are none.

Where this applies

Keel is offered in the United States and is operated from the United States by CG Software Services LLC. Because nothing you enter is transmitted, there is no international transfer of your information to disclose.

Medical disclaimer

Keel is not a medical device. It does not diagnose, screen, score, predict or treat any condition, and it is not a substitute for care from a qualified clinician. Nothing in the app is a diagnosis or medical advice.

You don't have to be sure it's an emergency. 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (Call or text · United States). Crisis Text Line (Text HOME to 741741). Emergency services (If you are in immediate danger).

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the effective date above changes with it. Keel's data practices are a product promise rather than a detail, so a material change would not be made quietly: if a future version were ever to collect anything, we would say so plainly here, and in the App Store privacy label, before that version shipped.
